Well we know ccp wants to make ships more modular and have individually targetable sub sections (target their engines and fire...) so how about we make ship construction more modular, instead of having one BP for say a megathron... you have one master bp for the hull wich tells you what ship your makeing, and then you have sub bp's for all the different sub systems... power, propulsion, electronics..... and you put all these together to make the ship. this then means you could upgrade the variouse bp's so you get better engines/grid/hull/whatever. to fit this into the rest of eve, you would get the standard meta 0 bps, then 'named' meta 1 through 4, then the T2 bp's (can only go onto the Kronos hull bp?) then faction bp's. there would obviousely be an increasing cost to this, and create a raft of ships between the basic models and the faction t2 ships. (you might include the ability to take out and replace subsystems from a built ship, the ability to overload these subsystems, and possibly the ability to individulally dmg these subsystems. (possibly give ships sheild, armour, hull, structure) so once your through the hull (hull bleeds at 25% ?) you can either just blow them up (easy to do as very low hp and big guns) or carefully disable them by targetting subsystems (hitting power subsystems causes total power falior and either makes the ship explode or if it doesn't explode removes the self destruct capability)
anyway I moove off the point, it would be nice to have more variability, these bp's would have different build requirements increasing/decreasing cost depending (and all other balencing issues to be balanced).
and would make the sandbox even bigger (ccp likes the sandbox.... aparently)
EDIT: Oh I forgot to add, if you decided to build your hull out of carbon fibre for example you might get a reduction in cost and a big reduction in mass but also a big reduction in hp. so it has the posibility of specialiseation raterh than just each thing is just more than the last thing for more isk alowing rich player to buy victory kinda thing.
